The north didn't have much use for slaves because the primary use of slavery was in fields and for agriculture. There were some northerners who kept house slaves prior to abolitionism gaining popularity, but it was nowhere near as common as in the South. In order to give a better answer, a year would be needed because slavery was all throughout the colonies at one point or another, it just stopped in the North first.
