In 1910 these were all incorporated in the Union of South Africa under British rule until 1961 when the Republic of South Africa was proclaimed.

The Scramble for Africa was a period during the New Imperialism period where the continent of Africa was invaded occupied and colonized by the major European powers.
The South Atlantic has South America and Southern Africa with adjacent coasts. All of South America was colonized by Spain apart from Brazil which was colonized by Portugal. Southern Africa was colonized by various European powers including Britain, Portugal, Germany, France and Spain.
