The Battle of Gettysburg was an "accidental" battle in its' beginning. Elements of Confederate Gen. Harry Heth's command(A.P. Hill's 3rd Corps) encountered Union Cavalry under Gen.John Buford's command in the town. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia was under orders from Gen.Lee to avoid a "general engagement" with the Union Army. Once the first contact happened and the shooting started it was like a small snow ball rolling downhill, getting bigger and bigger. Lee issued orders to all of his commanders to quickly march toward the fighting. Some soldiers were more than 30 miles away and had to endure a very hard march to get to Gettysburg. Once the battle started it would have been almost impossible to stop it from continuing and growing.
