After the U.S. evacuated the American embassy in Saigon, North Vietnam which had already taken over much of South Vietnam invaded Saigon. They met little resistance. The war continued into the 1980s.

The South Vietnamese were left under equipped and poorly trained. South Vietnam was united with North Vietnam. Only this time it was a communist country. Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Mihn City after the North's late leader, Ho Chi Mihn

Actually, after the French Indochina war (before American involvement) North Vietnam formed a communist central government, and South Vietnam formed a democracy. It remained that way after the U.S. and allied military left Vietnam in April, 1973. The South Vietnam military forces defended the south until April of 1975, when North Vietnamese communist forces captured Saigon, and unified the country under a socialist central government in Hanoi in the north.
Although the country is largely capitalist today, the communist party holds the majority in the government.
