The soldiers were inexperienced and untrained unlike the Japanese who had real fighting experience in China. The Indians were trained for the desert environment while the soldiers were given lousy guns as the British had financial problems while fighting the Germans in Europe. The British spent too much time in relaxation as they thought that Singapore was an impregnable fortress so they underestimated the Japanese. The British had only 130+ slow and lousy planes' machines are often jammed while the Japanese had 600+ high-tech and modern planes. Although the British had 2 battle cruisers , 4 destroyers and many other slow ships. These make up a fleet. HMS Prince of Wales, HMS Repulse, HMS Electra, HMS Express, HMS Tenedos, HMS encounter, HMS Jupiter and HMAS Vampire. Prince of Wales had the best air- tracking system that time, but were not in working condition. An air-craft carrier called HMS Indomitable was supposed to go with them, but were damaged before reaching Singapore. They were all destroyed by Japanese's torpedo bombers and many people died. The planes did not arrive in time to provide air cover. The British had lost total control in both the skies and the seas. As for land, although the Japanese are greatly outnumbered more than 4 to 1, they fought bravely under a brillant and fierce General, General Yamashita. In the end, General Arthur Ernest Percival decided to surrender as his armies were tired thirsty and hungry. The POW is up to a total of 12,000

When did colonial Singapore happen?

Singapore fell to the Japanese in 1942.The Battle of Singapore was fought in the South-East Asian theatre of World War II when the Empire of Japan invaded the Allied stronghold of Singapore. Singapore was the major British military base in South East Asia and nicknamed the "Gibraltar of the East". The fighting in Singapore lasted from 8 December 1941 to 15 February 1942.It resulted in the fall of Singapore to the Japanese, and the largest surrender of British-led military personnel in history.[2] About 80,000 British, Australian and Indian troops became prisoners of war, joining 50,000 taken by the Japanese in the Malayan campaign. Britain's Prime Minister Winston Churchill called the ignominious fall of Singapore to the Japanese the "worst disaster" and "largest capitulation" in British history. (source Wikipedia)

How could the fall of Singapore have been prevented?

The fall of Singapore could have been prevented in many ways, but in my opinion if the British had not been so complacent they may have been able to prevent Singapore from falling to the Japanese. Many of the British soldiers took the Japanese lightly. They did not think that they would be able to capture Singapore as they regarded it as an impregnable fortress. In addition, it could have also been prevented if the British had more and better aircrafts. The British only had 158 aircrafts. which were already obsolete, when the Japanese started their invasion. By contrast, the Japanese severely outnumbered them and had more advanced fighter planes. This caused the British to easily lose control of the skies, helping the Japanese.
