Though in practice we may find many differences in the religions (Islm and Hindu) but they are similar in many ways. The confluence of the philosophies of the two religions can be found in Sufism. Din-E-Illahi the religion started by Akbar The Great (India) was also based on the same principles.
To cite an example: Allah o Akbar is the most common phrase of prayer or Namaz in Islam and the word Om also indicates towards it; that God you are the greatest , and so great that you can not be described.
In fact Practicing Muslim religion is form of practicing Hinduism philosophy of Adveta meaning non existence of second; or nothing is there but one God.
Since God in totality cannot be described then why to make an idol for him or any form for that matter. Therefore only his prophets like Prophet Mohammad and the Jesus are worshiped more as a Guru to lead us to the ultimate God. Thus the form of No Idol Worship. Guru in Hinduism is given a status at times higher than that of God (Ref Saint Kabir; Guru Gobind Dou Khare Kako Lagon Payen; Balihari Guru apne Godind Diyo Bataye. Means I must salute the Guru first before God as he only led me to the God).
It is to be noted that when the religions like Christianity and Islam came into being Hinduism was well established and practiced by more than thousands of years. So all the religions existing had had a great influence of Hindu philosophy on their basic understanding of the universe and on new religions started by these great saints. No wonder that these great saints may had had their formal education by Hindu Gurus or in India.
Comments on Answer AboveThe main differences are that:
Muslim's believe in Allah and Mohammad the prophet the one who created the quaran.
hindus believe in many gods so they are not a monotheistic faith like christianity, Judaism and islam.
The very first thing Islam is the religion of Allah he himself send it down to His Prophet Muhammad(PBUH).
Now your answer is that hindus make their idols themselves and then use them for WORSHIP even knowing that these idols were made by them and hinduism has know word of Allah. You must have read the ten commandments send down to Hazrat Musa if not then you should in it there is that not to make idol and not to mock God's name. Hindus themselves know that there is a God up in the heavens watching over us and so that is why some times they use islamic words like Mashallah, Inshallah. which means that every thing can happen by His permission.
Hinduism has a number of gods - Islam has one.
In a nut shell.....
Hindu: believe that god can take many forms
Islam: believe their is only one god
Hinduism: No beef, Non violence, Tolerance to non Hindus & Peace. Muslim: No pork, Non tolerance to Non-Muslims & polygamy.
Judaism and Islam have many similarities. Hinduism does not fall in this category because Hinduism is an Ancient South Asian Religion and Culture. Judaism and Islam believe in One God. Hinduism does not fall in this category, because they believe in many gods. Judaism and Islam have too many similarities to list. It would be wise to search "Similarities between Judaism and Islam" or see the related question below.

Hinduism is older
Many. But the most obvious difference is 'exclusivity'. You have to worship Allah in Islam, Hinduism has a range of Gods and Goddesses. In Islam, the first thing Allah would check is whether you have accepted Qur'an and Mohammad. In Hinduism, the judgment is secular. Hindus and non-hindus, all are judged irrespective of their belief.
