The Universe is larger than our minds can conceive, and we are alive in it for such a brief time. Religion, if not taken to crazy extremes, allows people to have lives with meaning, and believe that they have a connection with the infinite and the eternal.

Religion can offer a sense of community and belonging, provide comfort and hope during difficult times, and offer ethical guidelines and moral support for decision-making. Additionally, religious practices such as meditation or prayer can promote mental well-being and reduce stress.

There is no positive impact on politics from religion, but there are many negative influences. In the US, it leads to false or incorrect judgments by believers vis a vis the candidate in question. It also leads to many candidates attempting to win over large voting blocs by appealing to the lowest common denominator in loosely connected political groups who can only identify with one another on the basis of a professed belief in the same system of dogma, regardless of actual differences in moral or religious judgements that actually exist between them.

In countries that are not the US, there are no examples of religion in politics doing anything to advance individual liberty or freedom. In the Middle East, religion is used as a political tool to maintain or advance the powers of individuals already wielding total power. Gaddaffi, Iran's Ayatollah, Syria's Bashar al-Assad, and countless others both currently and historically are clear examples. In the west, the Catholic church uses its thankfully limited political clout to damage the reputations and legal rights of women and homosexuals. Take the contrapositive for proof: it was political influence on the Mormon church that led it to ban polygamy, not the church's influence on politics.

The only positive thing one can take from the influence of religion on politics (in the US, specifically) is that it's influence somehow protects us from destroying our moral behavior. This presumes, of course, that you already regard either homosexuality, abortion, sexuality, miscegenation, taxation, welfare, alcohol, drug use, scientific education, or one of many other issues as being wholly immoral, and that by allowing people to legally engage in these behaviors we subject the whole country to mortal danger.
