Aside from the inherited language and history, both countries started off as autocracies, although the ROK was under the guise of democracy, while the DPRK was a socialist state. They both implemented 5 year economic plans to improve their economies in the 1960s, although they relied on different tactics to achieve economic growth.
And because of the deep rooted history, the people of both countries are still inherently similar, just divided by the politics of their leaders and the heavily guarded DMZ.
