What are the steps to replacing a ignition switch for a GMC Safari Van?

First, safe the SIR system (airbag). Remove power by disconnecting negative battery terninal. Let it sit for 20 minutes with no power.
Second, remove the airbag. There are four spring clips on the back of the steering wheel. They are in a resessed in holes. You can feel for them or use a mirror to see them. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees so they are possitioned at top and bottom. If you have a tild wheel, tilt it all the way up and access them from the bottom. Use a small flat tip screwdriver to pry the clips back. If you are working from the bottom, pull the screwdriver down, if from the top pull it up. You will here them pop off. Do this to all 4 of them. There are two side by side about two inches apart. Once you do one side rotate the wheel and get the other side.
Third, remove the bottom plastic steering colum plastic cover (torx bit) Two screws.
Fourth, remove the torx screws holding the top steering wheel colum cover (two screws) There is one on each side and you have to access them from the bottom. You will need a female bit (or a 3/16 12 point socket).
Fifth, remove the boot from the shift lever.
Sixth, remove the top plastic steering colum cover. It will fit over the key tumbler but barely.
Seventh, remove the key tumbler. Use an awe, turn the key to the start position (you did disconnect the battery right). Put the awe in the release hole on top of the tumbler. Once you push the pin down, turn the key back to the run position. Remove the awe and pull the tumbler out.
Eighth, unplug the three wire connector for the pass key.
Ninth, use small pliers and turn the key in switch clockwise. It will then pull out.
Tenth, use a small female torx driver and remove the screwes from the ignition switch. You will need a torx driver, a socket won't fit. It's real small too, good luck finding one.
eleventh, trace the wires down the steering colume until you find the plug. Un plug it
You should be done at this point. You might have to pull the steering wheel off if you have any access problems.
If you are going to work on one of these yourself, buy a factury service manual. They are about $120 new. It's the best money you will ever spend.

If you are replacing the key lock cylinder you have to do the first 2 steps above then drill out the shear head bolts and rmove them with a screw extracter, install new switch with new shear head bolt until the head breaks off and then reverse order for assembly.
