It's insect feces (poop).
Put a small quaint of it on a piece on white paper.
Put two or three drops of warm water on the insect feces.
Let dry.
If it stains the paper red, most likely it's from fleas or something else that lives on blood.

Frass consists of excess dirt, ant feces, and "garbage" that they are removing from the nest. The ants kick it out while making their tunnels and trails under the cement. There are over 20 types of ants, and they all have different treatment methods, as they all have different habits. This is why it is important to correctly identify them first before spraying them. For example, if an ant that is known as a "Pharaoh" ant is sprayed with a pesticide, they will not be seen for a few days, cause they go back into their nest, and "split" the colony. This is what is referred to as a colony "budding" Then they get a lot worse, and the only treatment is baiting, and boric acid. They also like to get in switch plates as well, which is where dusts and gel baits are typically used. This type of ant can be frequently found in hospitals, and can be hard to treat.
