Left Atrial Abnormality is a finding on electrocardiograms (EKG). It is suggestive but not diagnostic of an enlarged left atrium, the chamber receiving blood from the lungs.

The most common cause of a big left atrium is high blood pressure but it is by far not the only cause. Other causes include mitral valve disease (valve separating left atrium and left ventricle) and left heart failure (cardiomyopathies).

The atria are found in the heart, the two small chambers at the top. In heart failure LVF LEFT VENTRICULAR FAILURE blood doesn't flow round heart properly so this chamber of the heart doesn't work well

What causes left artial abnormality?

Left atrial abnormality is commonly caused by high blood pressure and the left heart failure. This abnormality means that the left atrium is slightly enlarged under EKG.

What does left atrial abnormality in ecg mean?

An electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart. It produces a trace of the heart working and the trace for an individual can be compared to that of a normal, healthy heart. A left atrial abnormality means that the ECG for the heart in question shows that there is something wrong with the electrical signal relating to the heart's left atrium. The left atrium is one of four chambers in the heart. It receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins, and pumps it into the left ventricle, via the mitral valve. You need to get the doctor to explain the CAUSE of the anomalous electrical signal.

Can left atrial enlargement be reversed?

Yes

What is pto heart disease?

If you mean PFO, it is a defect in the septum (wall) between the two upper (atrial) chambers of the heart. The defect is an incomplete closure of the atrial septum. A PFO is present in everyone before birth but seals shut in about 80% of people. It is not a disease but an abnormality.

In atrial septum defect primum why the blood shunt from left to right atrium?

In the atrial defect primum, the blood shunt from the left to the right because of the blood volume overload from the right.

What is the cause of an abnormality of the left thalamus?

Why is the P wave sometimes notched in an ECG due to atrial hypertrophy?

Check into left atrial enlargement. usually a sign of notched P waves

Is left atrial abnormality a death sentence?

No, it is definitely not a "death sentance".It would depend on the nature of the abnormality. Generally speaking - a ventricular problem would be much worse because of the amount of work they do in pumping blood to the lungs and around the body. The atria on the other hand just fill the ventricles, so they do not work as hard.Certainly not but it depends on the abnormality. I have atrial fibrillation and it is an inconvenience by itself but I have an additional heart problem which means the irregular beats can be dangerous. I'm in and out of hospital, see my doctor weekly or sometimes more often to check my heart, and can't over exert myself because the poor heart can't cope! Having said that I live a normal working life, but I just have to be aware of my heart.Of course not! No way! You need to find out the reason why you have the abnormality (is it genetic? damage to the heart?). Then you can work out what is the best way to manage your condition. A doctor can tell you more in depth.Only if it's mitral valve failure. That can cause many things from which you could die of if not fixed by surgical procedure. Left heart failure is FATAL.

The septum.

What causes Left atrial enlargement?

Left atrial enlargement is a not uncommon condition in adults. It means the left atrium of the heart (which holds blood before it goes into the left ventricle) is enlarged. This can happen for a number of reasons. Lung or heart disease are probably the most common reasons, but problems with the mitral valve can also result in left atrial enlargement - either a stiff valve that does not open well, or a "leaky" valve through which blood can go backwards in the heart.
