Possible causes for overheating include failed serpentine belt, failed water pump, internal or external coolant leak, restriction in the radiator, or inoperative radiator fan.
The most common cause of overheating is a thermostat stuck in the closed position. Other causes of overheating could be a clogged radiator, faulty water pump, a faulty radiator fan relay, a faulty radiator fan motor, no coolant or low coolant level.
Get your radiator checked, may have blocked core
There are a few reasons a vehicle is overheating. The common causes are the thermostat, water pump, radiator, or the fan stopped working.
There are several causes that will reduce the water level in your car radiator. The most common cause is evaporation. Engine overheating will also reduce the radiator water level.

Plugged radiator, Bad thermostat, water pump not working, radiator hoses collapsing and dont forget no oil
a bad termastat
The most common causes would be low coolant and inoperable radiator fan.
Overheating Low coolant Defective radiator cap Stuck thermostat
Sticking thermostat, blown head gasket, partially clogged radiator, or defective cooling fan.
It is very common for the impeller of a VW to break apart. The result is engine overheating and no heat. Usually, the the radiator remains full unless severe overheating causes a boilover and consequent loss of coolant. Also expect that the engine becomes hot yet radiator and heater hoses remain cool. If this happens, replace the water pump. It is usually convenient to replace the timing belt at this time.
