Souns like a head gasket to me.
I have a 2000 zx2 and it has a thermostat, if that is your question. Having said that, my heater quit working and it turned out to be the cable came loose under the dash on the left side of the radio. At first I thought it was the thermostat but was wrong. Duct taped the cable in place and the control and heater started working fine again.
My nephew's 98 was doing that. He tried changing the thermostat. No difference. A mechanic unhooked his heater core lines and flushed a bunch of junk out of it and it worked great. That was 2 years ago and his heater is starting to get lame again. My '97 is also not blowing the greatest heat. I'm going to try the thermostat change and heater core flush and see what happens.
i have had a brand new thermostat that would not close, try replacing it again with factory parts not one from discount auto supplier.
You will need to know the current water temperature in your tank by using a thermometer, so you know if you need to increase or decrease the water temperature for your fish. Take your heater, place it in the tank according to the instructions, DO NOT plug the heater in for at least 20 minutes. After plugging the heater in, slowly turn the thermostat up until the heater light comes on and turn it back until the light goes out, if the light is on when you plug the heater in, slowly turn the thermostat down until you find the point where the light goes out. You have now just adjusted your heater thermostat to the current water temperature, turn it up or down as needed, but only by a small bit and allow 24 hours for the water to heat up or cool down, before adjusting the heater again.
The heater core may be plugged. With the engine running and fully warmed up, feel both of the heater hoses with your hands. If one hose is hot and the other is luke warm or cold, the heater is plugged in which case you can try flushing the heater core. If both hoses are hot, the temp blend door acuator behind the dash assembly is broken. If both hoses are cold, replace the thermostat again and be sure the cooling system is full.
Thermostat could be at the tempure setiting, No antiboil antifreeze coolant, and the water leakage or a bad waterpump.
Thermostat come in different temperature ratings - meaning the valve opens at a specific temperature.Likely your new one is a higher temp (192?), thereby keeping the coolant from getting to the heater core until that higher temperature is achieved. Not sure what the specific numbers are, but you might want to swap it again for something lower (180 degrees?).
IF THIS IS NOT A HEAT PUMP SYSTEM... COULD BE; thermostat connecting(calling for) heat and cool together. connnection problem in wires- or bad thermostat. find wiring diagram for t-stat, read up on checking voltage in thermostat in the heat-or cool mode. they are separate. does t-stat have separate 'heat-cool' mode. in other words- do you have to switch to heat mode-or cool mode. if it is a heat pump--ask again with that stated in question.
the temp gauge will run ot then cool that is when the thermostat is opening again
One of the reasons you heater may not work is the thermostat. If the car keeps overhrating or the temperature gauge or light goes on/up could mean thermostat needs replacing if not not too sure why. Part is not very expensive I dont think. you need to carefully check all the fuses again /i did mine and looked at fuses all ok so i thought look again one not working hey presto /nothing to do with thermostat
Yes, it could very well be your thermostat not working properly enabling the heat you seak. Or your heater core it's self could be worn out and needs replacing. But I would first pull out your thermostat and test it. If you don't know hoe to test it keep reading. You can test your thermostat by removing it from engine then placing it in boil ling water, watch it closly. the spring would have moved, if it didn't move make your water hotter. then try again. you will notice a gap started to appear in the middle of the thermostat. If it works it should open fairly wide. If it opens slightly or not at all, I suggest replacing it. Know as for your heater core, i am not to certain, but i noticed personally that when mine went, i would crank the heater and only steam or fog would come out. So i figured it was shot and replaced it problem solved. Hopefully this helps you solve or figure out your lack of heat situation. If you pinch off the top radiator hose and you get heat in the passenger compartment, it is probably a T-stat. If you feel the hose going into the heater core and feel the hose coming out of the heater core this will tell you if the heater core is plugged. They should both be fairly hot. If one is cold, it's plugged.
heater core may be partially plugged up or the heater hose may be collapsed so that in motion the cold air can contribute to cooling the small amount of coolant reaching the heater but at a motionless idle the warm engine compartment helps keep the heater producing warmth
