Many colleges offer a degree in journalism. If you plan to major in journalism but are still in high school, you might consider taking classes in English and writing. Here is more input: * I have looked into that major too. If you want to be a news anchor or something like that, you want broadcast journalism. If you just want to be a reporter then a regular journalism degree is what you want. That would include a lot of English classes, some journalism classes, and probably some public speaking or communication classes. Many newspaper editors indicate that they prefer to hire reporters with English majors rather than journalism majors, as English majors often have stronger writing skills. Warning: Attending journalism classes does NOT make you a better journalist. The benefits of taking these programs is dubious at best. It is recommended that you simply start writing for any possible publication, such as a student newspaper, local community newsletter, or start your own blog.

Another viewpoint: I studied journalism at Langara College in Vancouver 20 years ago, and found that it did, in fact, improve my journalistic skills tremendously (I still have an active career in writing, although I now write fiction and poetry as opposed to news). In addition to the core courses, we also studied history, economics, English and political science. I would strongly recommend you include as many of these "peripheral" subjects as possible in your studies. Being a journalist carries with it a responsibility to your readers: the broader your base of education, the more well-positioned you are to report the news accurately and knowledgeably.

English/Communication (formal writing) and Modern Studies would be necessary subjects to take. In addition Religious and Moral / Ethics education would also be a good subject to peruse. Geography and History will likly be useful to have. In addition knowing a foreign language would also be very useful.

It also depends if you have a specific area of journalism you wish to enter. Think about the kind of reporting you would like to do and the interests you have. Then try and match subjects around these.

It is never to early to contact a university that would interest you and finding out what they look for in students looking to peruse a degree in journalism.

A candidate can either opt for a B.Sc or a M.Sc course. a B.Sc course is generally a Three year course and it is better that the candidate secures graduation certificate from a UGC recognised University or an institute with the same affiliation! the Candidate can choose between Mass com, advertisement and Journalism. on the other hand an M.Sc course is a two year program rest all same as B.Sc. there are very few institutes in Kolkata that offers an affordable media and journalism package with good faculty as iLEAD.

Few companies today will hire a journalist unless he or she has attended college (or university). You don't necessarily need a college degree, but many successful journalists today got their start working for their college newspaper and taking journalism courses. But even in high school, it never hurts to get a good start. In grade 11 and 12, make sure you take some extra writing courses-- a good journalist, on TV or radio or in print, must be a good writer, and make his or her point in an interesting way. If you have courses in public speaking, those are useful too, since you will need to present and explain your views to the public. As for extra-curricular activities, if your high school has a school newspaper, become a member, since it will give you experience in reporting.
