In December 1934, Mussolini accused the Abyssinians of aggression at an oasis called Wal Wal. He ordered Italian troops stationed in Somaliland and Eritrea to attack Abyssinia. In October 1935, the Italian army invaded Abyssinia. The Abyssinians could not hope to stand up to a modern army - they were equipped with pre-World War One rifles and little else. The Italians used armoured vehicles and even mustard gas in their attack. The capital, Addis Ababa, fell in May 1936 and Haile Selassie was removed from the throne and replaced by the king of Italy, Victor Emmanuel. Somaliland, Eritrea and Abyssinia were all united under the name Italian East Africa. Mussolini turned to the man he had considered a "silly little monkey" when they had first met. Hitler and Nazi Germany.

Hitler extended an inviation for Mussolini to visit Germany. Over the talks, Hitler did most of the talking. He asked for Italy's help to distract France and England but did not require Italy to attack across France's border.

Why did the stressa front fall apart?

The Stressa Front fell apart because Mussolini of Italy invaded the African nation of Abyssinia in 1935. The Stressa Front was between Britain and France (major nations in the league of nations at the time) but when Mussolini invaded Abyssinia, its prince Haile Selassi appealed to the league and it was clear Italy was the aggressor nation. So the league of nations applied limited economic sanctions on Italy (oil was not included) and Mussolini felt offended and instead joined forces with Hitler.

It was very significant because Mussolini, the Italian dictator had signed this agreement saying that he would stand with the League of Nations in preventing Hitler from uniting Germany with Austria and breaking other factors in the Treaty of Versailles.
