"Ulysses don't scare worth-a-damn!" went the saying. He was a man totally without nerves, quite happy to go on chatting or writing reports while shells exploded all round him.
The only time he got nervous was in November-December 1864 when George Thomas refused to be rushed into launching the Battle of Nashville.
Grant kept thinking that the Army of Tennessee would find its way into Virginia and come to the aid of Robert E. Lee, and ordered Thomas to attack at once.
Thomas wasn't quite ready, and when he was, the temperature suddenly dropped below zero, covering the field with ice. While Grant was on his way to Nashville to fire Thomas for insubordination, the ice melted, and Thomas attacked at last - with spectacular success. (And he never got fired!)
His original name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. He didn't want to or mean to change it. When he went to a military academy, they signed him up as that. Since then, he was known as Ulysses S. Grant.
