You don't really specify in an aspect of importance? However Englishmen and women have made history for a number of reasons. So I'll name a few:
William Shakespeare 1564 - 1616
Firstly if you haven't heard of him I seriously query your schooling, for he is considered a literature God. Shakespeare's work express many different emotions and themes, love, revenge, war and so on. His plays, poems and sonnets continue to be read because those themes can still be connected to ones own time. Such as falling in love, (Romeo and Juliet) and even domestic relations (Taming of the Shrew). His writing outshone those of his time and England is renowned for its rich literature and continues to be respected for it.
Other infamous British authors are the Bronte sisters (Charlotte, Emily, and Anne), Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.
Sir Issac Newton 1642 - 1727
He was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer and much more. He is considered by many to be 'one of the greatest and most influential scientists who ever lived'. Newton discovered universal gravitation and the three laws of motion in which dominated the scientific view of the psychical universe for the next 3 centuries. He advanced the Scientific Revolution.
There are so many, Sir Winston Churchill, the Suffragettes who fought for women's rights fiercely, Margaret Thatcher. The list truly goes on...
Samuel Pepys was an important source of the study of the lifestyles of the English people and the history of the Neo-Classical period.
Bede was important because his magnus opus, "The Ecclesiastical History of the English People," which documented the history of the English people until the date of its writing, around 731. It proves invaluable for historians to learn about the history of the English people; however, Bede's writing was heavily tainted with Christian ideology, for Bede literally grew up in a monastery from the age of 5. His works demonstrate the mix of pagans and Christians and the development of the English people.
The battle of Plassey was an important event in Indian History because after this battle (Battle of Plassey) the English people ruled India.
