The Canal linked Albany to Buffalo. From Buffalo people could to the Midwest. Farm produce from Canada, Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, and Indiana could get to New York. Immigrants from Europe could get to Wisconsin and other Midwestern states to start their own farms.
