"The Green Berets" is a nickname referring to the United States Army Special Forces. After being selected for and completing the Special Forces Qualification Course, conducted at the Special Warfare Center (SWC) in Ft. Bragg North Carolina, soldiers are allowed to wear the Special Forces tab and the Green Beret. However not long ago, anyone working in Group Support Battalions were allowed to wear a green beret. This was reversed and stands today allowing only those holding the Special Forces Military Occupation Specialty to wear the Green Beret.
Additional Answer
The green beret is also worn by Royal Marine commandos, and this predates the US special forces' use of the green beret. The green beret must be 'earned', as it is only issued to a marine upon completion of training.
