The Germans invaded and took over the following counties in this order: Poland, Danzig, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, Belgium, Holland, France (partial), Monaco, Yugoslavia and Greece (with the help of Italy), Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia and The Soviet Union (partial).
Germany's allies in Europe were Italy, Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Croatia, Slovakia (formerly a part of Czechoslovakia) and Finland. The Czech part of Czechoslovakia was a German protectorate (colony) called Bohemia and Moravia having been taken over in 1938 after the Munich Conference.
The neutral countries of Europe were Sweden, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Turkey, San Marino, Andorra, Spain, Portugal and Ireland.
The Germans took over the surrounding countries because they wanted to get back land they had lost in WWI.
