The Baha'i calendar has nineteen months, each consisting of nineteen days, and each named for one of the attributes of God. The Baha'i year begins on Naw Ruz (lit. New Year), March 21, the first day of spring each year. Ayyam'i-Ha are the four intercalary days that immediately precede the 19-day Fast, which is the last month of the Baha'i calendar. These are days of gift-giving, charitable works, etc. The Fast, in turn, ends with the new year.

Another major Baha'i celebration, commemorating the Proclamation of Baha'u'llah, are the twelve days of Ridvan, April 21-May 2. Baha'is also commemorate certain historical events that took place within the Faith.

There are very few ceremonies or rituals within the Baha'i Faith, but it is incorrect to say that the Baha'i Faith has no ritual or ceremonies. There are three daily obligatory prayers from which a believer may choose, which require washing of the hands and face and the performance of certain actions with specific verses while facing toward the Shrine of Baha'u'llah in Akko, Israel. There is also the recital of a specific phrase meaning "God is all-glorious" 95 times a day. There is a congregational obligatory prayer for the dead, and the body is washed, wrapped in cotton or silk and placed in a casket. There are also pilgrimage rites for obligatory pilgrimage to the house of the Bab in Shiraz (Iran) and the house of Baha'u'llah in Baghdad, but these pilgrimages cannot at this time be performed because the house of the Bab was destroyed by Iranian authorities and the house of Baha'u'llah was stolen from the Baha'is in the 1920s by Shiah opponents. Marriage is simple but requires the saying of a specific scriptural verse in the presence of two witnesses under the auspices of a local Baha'i institution. Pretty much everything else is performed with reverence and any "ceremony" is primarily a matter of creating reverence and joy in worship without significant constraints.

The Baha'i Faith celebrates the diversity of the human family. Differences of appearance are considered adornments not reasons for division. The human family is like a flower garden - the more colors, the more beautiful it is.

Where did bahai com from?

The Baha'i Faith originated in 19th Century Persia, present day Iran. The prophet, Baha'u'llah (ie., "Glory of God"), was born in Tehran. He was exiled first to Baghdad, later to Turkey, and finally imprisoned in Akka, in the Ottoman province of Palestine. So the world centre of the Bahai Faith is in what is now Israel. There are shrines and gardens there, and the Bahai international administrative institutions.
