how do I loosen fan belt to remaove alternator for replacement of alternator?
Any belt in a car assists in moving all parts within the engine to work in providing power and cooling to vehicle. The alternator provides power to the battery and the fan cools the radiator so the engine will not overheat.
Actually the charging mechanism in an automobile is the alternator, and it works whether the wheels are moving or not. The alternator is one of the parts in the engine compartment that have a drive belt. These are the belts that turn the cooling fan for most cars, and for that reason the belts are commonly known as "fan belts". Most new cars have what is known as a serpentine fan belt, that turns more than one part of the car, the alternator being one of the parts being turned. While the engine is running the alternator is putting out a charge that continually charges the coil and other ignition systems along with the cars battery. When the alternator fails the car will run until the battery is drained of it's charge, and that is when you have a dead battery usually.
If is probably an old fan belt that is slipping and causing a screeching noise. Check the one that is attached to your AC or alternator and replace it if necessary.
Any particular kind of car and motor?
Most likely it is a loose fan belt (commonly used on older vehicles, prior to the newer serpentine style belt). The fan belt can be tightened by loosening the alternator mounting bolts and adjusting the alternator tension on the belt.
A 1974 VW has an alternator, and it's pretty easy to change: buy a rebuilt one unhook the battery remove the carb, hood and fan belt unhook the wires going to the alternator, and the strap holding it to the alternator stand remove all the screws holding the fan shroud on and lift the fan shroud out of the car there is a nut on the front holding the fan on, and a nut on the back holding the pulley on. Remove both nuts, then the things they held on. Don't lose any of the washers under the pulley cup! There are four bolts holding the alternator backing plate to the fan shroud. Take them off, then lift the alternator away from the fan shroud. There are four MORE bolts holding the alternator to the backing plate. Remove them too, and separate the alternator from the backing plate. Once this is done, bolt the new alternator in place and "installation is the reverse of removal."
an alternator recharges the battery of your car
The alternator of a car is responsible for charging the car battery. Someone who repairs a broken alternator ensures that the alternator works again and continues to keep the car battery charged.
You can purchase a car alternator at Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Firestone, Midas, Goodyear, CarX and you can also purchase a car alternator from any car dealership.
This is for the 200sx and Sentra with the 1.6L engine. Always have the alternator tested before removing it from the car. Auto part stores will often test it for you at no charge. Disconnect the battery first! Unplug the wires to the radiator fan units and remove the fan units from the radiator. Set aside. Pull up on the radiator overflow tank and set aside. Remove the fan belt that runs the alternator. First you must loosen the fan belt by loosening the 13mm center bolt on the idler pulley near the alternator. Look under the car from the front and between the air conditioning compressor and it's pulley. There is a shaft with a 8mm nut shape on it's end. Loosen this to loosen the belt. Remove the belt. Disconnect the wires on the alternator. Take out the three bolts that hold the alternator to the mounting brackets while holding on to the alternator. Maneuver the alternator carefully between the exhaust manifold and radiator taking extra caution not to bent the cooling fins of the radiator. Reverse the process to install. Make sure all connections are secure before hooking up the battery and starting the car. Never disconnect the battery while the car is running. That may damage the alternator.
