In basic scientific terms, an atmosphere is a the gas surrounding a celestial body. For instance the 'atmosphere' of Earth is the air we breath.

The word can however also be used to describe a feeling or mood. For instance one could say that the atmosphere was electric when Martin Luther King gave his famous address on the steps of the Lincoln memorial. Or that the drama created a heavy atmosphere.

It can also mean a particular environment or surrounding's influence.

An atmosphere is a layer of gases that may surround an object of sufficient mass in space.

The term "atmosphere" is also used to describe the conditions in or about an occupied dwelling, room, or other venue. Examples "the dark atmosphere of the museum", "the refined atmosphere of the ballroom".
