Original answer: "It is located near San Francisco in a town called Oakland. So my guess is Oakland."

-- I'm afraid that's not it, as the Oakland Airport is entirely different than SFO which is located south of San Francisco proper and not east across the Bay Bridge.

The "O" is very likely the final "O" in San FranciscO. There are a lot of "SF" airports across the globe -- San Felix (SFX), San Fernando (in California that's SFR, but there are also San Fernando airports in the Philippines and Spain as well)...

So for an abbreviated airport code where there are many similar airport codes, in this case you get SFO.

It stands for San Francisco, Oakland. I was an import manager for 7 years and my old boss confirmed this. He was and still is in import export since the 30's. At one time there was one port name for San Francisco, Oakland. SFO Planes would land in San Francisco first then go to Oakland. There was even a plane that went down on the way to Oakland in the San Francisco bay.
