Mapped network drive. In Windows networks, an external resource has the form "\\MyServer\MyFolder\MySubFolder\MyFile.doc". The folder part, "\\MyServer\MyFolder\MySubFolder", can be assigned ("mapped") to a drive letter, for example, "M:"; in that case, you refer to the document as "M:\MyFile.doc".

Mapping a drive simply means to connect a local drive with a specially allocated shared directory or folder on another computer. After a drive has been mapped, you can access the shared resource and treat it as if it's located locally on your own computer. More than one computer may map their drives to this shared resource and take advantage of this networked space

When on a secure government site and nortons antivirus is not up to date can a flash drive that is not secure corrupt a hard drive?

Yes an unsecure flash drive can corrupt a hard drive and even infect other computers connected to the network. If the flash drive is connected to any computer that is infected with malware it is very possible that the same flash drive will covertly corrupt other computers. I suggest you buy iron key or another encryted flash drive
