The diaphragm is a muscle and when it expands, it creates a negative pressure in the lungs, this make the air outside (which has a relative positive pressure) want to flow into the lungs and maintain equilibrium. When the diaphragm contracts it creates a positive pressure in the lungs and the air is forced out.

The diaphragm's main purpose is to assist with the breathing process. When a person inhales, the diaphragm contracts and allows the air to come in.
It inflates and deflates the lungs.
1. Respiration: the diaphragm contracts during inhalation, leading to entrance of air from the environment; the diaphragm relaxes during exhalation, leading to exit of air to the environment.

2. Retaining of Food: the diaphragm prevents acid reflux from stomach, thus preventing vomiting.

3. Increase of Abdominal Pressure: the diaphragm, through increasing the abdominal pressure, can lead to the expulsion of vomit, urine, as well as feces.

4. Valsalva Maneuver: the diaphragm helps build-up pressure in the lung (such as the pressure you feel when defecation), hence making respiration and defecation a lot more easier. Student Doctor.
