On Yahoo!, I saw this response to a user's question and thought it was an apt answer to this question. :)

" 'It united the country -- we were going to go 'over there' to Europe and put an end to the war and then, in the words of President Woodrow Wilson, 'Make the world safe for democracy.' There was a lot of sentimentalizing of soldierly life -- the glorifying of military heroes, the glorifying of the women whom they left behind (think of all the films where the soldier kisses the girl and jumps on the train to go off to a military base), the nobility of a harsh, field life; this affected America by instilling a sense of pride in the country. Soldiers and self-sacrifice were admired: 'I want YOU for the United States Army!' as the famous poster had it. At home people collected rags and metal for making into clothing and equipment for 'our boys over there.' "

Due to the magnitude of the conflict involved in World War 1, movies in the 1920s were centered around it. Some depicted real life events that had happened during the war while others were fictional.

Actually, the war ended November 11, 1918. But from 1914-1918, the war forced women with husbands fighting in the war to find work, or take over family buisnesses, caused Meatless Mondays and Wheatless Wednesdays to conserve food supplies for soldiers and majorly affected countries, and after, Germany was forced to pay severe reparations, disarm itself and admit guilt to starting the war by the Treaty of Barsailles.
