In May of 1787, a meeting of our founding fathers began in Philadelphia's State House. This meeting was to be known as the Constitutional Convention. It was there the birth of our government took place.
May 25th was the first day to the constitutional convention held by our founding fathers. It was also when George Washington was unanimously nominated for president of the convention which he accepted.
The Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia with John Hancock elected as President. Also, in New York, Continental forces led by Ethan Allen and Benedict Arnold captured Fort Ticonderoga.
On October 5, 1789, a crowd of women, accompanied by the National Guard, marched to Versailles to confront the king about grain shortages, the soaring price of bread, as well as the King's unwillingness to cooperate with the people. The crowd then broke through the gates to the palace, calling for the king to return to Paris from Versailles. The following day, the king yielded. The National Guard led the crowd back to Paris. A point of interest: the procession was headed by a soldier holding a loaf of bread on his bayonet.
