Chemo is short for chemotherapy. While it once referred to a variety of chemical therapies, the term chemo is mostly used in the context of treating cancer these days.

A common chemotherapy agent blocks folic acid. That causes rapidly dividing tissue to stop growing. Aggressive tumors tend to grow rapidly, and thus depriving them of what they need to grow will cause them to start to die. However, hair and the intestines need folic acid too, and that is why people stay nauseous and go bald while taking chemotherapy.

Answer

Sometimes the medical establishment fights cancer with a cancer causing substance: radiation. This has the effect of burning the body internally as well as risking stimulating more cancer. Chemotherapy is when a toxin is instead injected directly into the patient, believing that it will only kill the cancer (and weaker) cells. Chemotherapy suppresses the immune system and creates greater acidosis, which is likely to stimulate even more cancer.

In fighting cancer the establishment has used the following methods historically:

1. Smoking (cigarettes)
2. Radiation
3. Surgery and Chemotherapy

The most recent strategy is surgery combined with chemotherapy, which stimulates cancers to spread though the blood to additional organs. Someone who survives this for a mere 5 years is considered a "cancer Survivor", and a success. I really could not make this stuff up. Google for more information about how doctors recommended brands of cigarettes based upon their health benefits in the 1940's and 1950's. Wait... it gets better. They also tell patients to use sunscreen even though vitamin D is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Naturally occurring vitamin D is one of the greatest anti-cancer agents.

How do you get past the fear of chemo?

I am writing this from my own experience. I am a 2x breast cancer survivor and had chemo both times. I got over my fear by thinking it will kill the cancer and I will live. I have a supporting husband and great doctors and nurses. Chemo is not as bad as it used to be many years ago. There are many drugs available now to counteract some of the side effects. Also everybody is different, side effects can be minimal. Chemo is not easy, but it kills the cancer. If you are the person that fears chemo go to the American Cancer Societys website and look for a chat room for the perticular cancer that you need chemo for, read some of the Q and A that patients and survivors post it will be of great help. The more you know the better the understanding. YOU will survive.
