Chemo is short for chemotherapy. While it once referred to a variety of chemical therapies, the term chemo is mostly used in the context of treating cancer these days.

A common chemotherapy agent blocks folic acid. That causes rapidly dividing tissue to stop growing. Aggressive tumors tend to grow rapidly, and thus depriving them of what they need to grow will cause them to start to die. However, hair and the intestines need folic acid too, and that is why people stay nauseous and go bald while taking chemotherapy.

They also tell patients to use sunscreen even though vitamin D is produced in the skin when it is exposed to sunlight. Naturally occurring vitamin D is one of the greatest anti-cancer agents.
