In my opinion Chicago is known for very few things that are truly original to the city.
-Historically:
The fire of 1871 which burned down a huge chunk of the city and during the massive reconstruction the first skyscraper was built in 1885.
The 1920s was known for a lot of famous gangsters.
...there's a whole lot more in history...
-food:
There is the Chicago style hot dog:
The hot dog rests in a pepper bun and topped with mustard, onion, sweet pickle relish (often a dyed neon green variety called "Nuclear Relish"), a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers, and celery salt
Of course, you have the Chicago style deep dish Pizza:
A buttery crust up to three inches tall at the edge, slightly higher than the large amounts of cheese and chunky tomato sauce, acting as a large bowl.
of less importance, but also original to Chicago are dishes like the jibarito, Italian beef, and aquarium smoked BBQ.
-Of course, Chicago has sports. Every big city has sports. whatever.
-Chicago does have a large amount of museums, but so do most cities. The ones that seem to really stand out:
The Field Museum. This place is the be all end all for American archaeological museums.
Museum of Science and Industry
Shedd Aquarium
Adler Planetarium
The city of Chicago is known for many things. It is known as "The Windy City" more for its politics than for its weather. It is well known as the home for many of the works of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. It is the home of the Merchandise Mart which is the only building in Chicago (and maybe the country) that has its own zip code (60654). It is known as the home of one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, the Sears Tower (or, as some now call it, the Willis Tower). It is known for the Great Chicago Fire which is fabled to have been started by a cow kicking over a kerosene lantern, but which became the civic lesson from which many current city ordinances were enacted. It is known for its O'Hare International Airport. It is known for its prohibition era gangsters, such as Al Capone and John Dillinger. It is known as the media home of Harpo Studios and The Oprah Winfrey Show. It is known as the Hollywood of the Midwest for being the home of such feature films as Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Breakup, Payback, Home Alone, Backdraft, Ordinary People, The Dark Knight, and Public Enemies, just to name a few.
