The Jack Russell Terrier was bread by a man named John Revere Russell who lived in England. He specificly bread these dogs to hunt foxes and other small animals. Jack Russells are bread in England and Ireland and are excellent dogs. They have a reputation to be mean or hyper but all they like to do is jump, play and run and be loved. The Jack Russell Terrier (who's had an official name change, it's now the "Parson Russell Terrier") is described by the American Kennel Club as being:
Outgoing and friendly, tenacious in the field and affectionate playful, exuberant and overwhelmingly affectionate in the home. No matter the venue, the breed is filled with energy, so he requires regular exercise and attention. Although good with children, he does not tolerate rough handling from toddlers. He is an independent and energetic terrier and requires his due portion of attention. He should not be quarrelsome. Shyness should not be confused with submissiveness. Submissiveness is not a fault. Sparring is not acceptable. The Parson is a clean breed and does not need frequent bathing, but the broken coat may need to be hand stripped.
It is part of the Terrier family. It is derived from the Fox Terier, which is derived from a wolf.

New answer. The Jack Russell's full bred name is the Jack Russell Terrier. In his book The Intelligence of Dogs, probably the best book on the subject, Stanley Coren describes intelligence tests he uses to find a dog's intelligence and he rates many breeds. His list of 79 breeds shows no terriers until #27 and most of the terriers start to show up on the list between #47 and #79. This means that generally speaking most terrier breeds are in the lower half of the list in intelligence. Jack Russell Terriers, which are noted for their intelligence, were not ranked because they were not recognized by the AKC until 2013. Coren did not include breeds recognized elsewhere but not in North America.
