Model 94 Winchester is is merely a shortening of the gun's original model designation which was Model 1894 Winchester. The model numbers of early Winchesters usually are the same as the year of introduction to the retail market. The "18" part of the year was dropped to avoid making the guns sound "old" with respect to their level of technology. The design of the Model 1894 is so good that it is still in production after 111 years of continuous manufacture. The number of guns made using this model's action design far exceeds that of any other sporting rifle in history. It is a reliable arm utilizing cartridges that are comfortable to shoot for the average person, yet will still effectively kill any animal on the American continents when used by a proficient shooter who is intelligent enough to shoot at game within the gun's effective range. The other major Winchester models that are now commonly referred to by their fore-shortened model designations (drop the first 2 numbers) are as follows: 1866, 1873, 1876, 1885, 1886, 1890, 1892, 1894, 1895, 1897, 1906, and 1912. If you have any further questions about Winchesters, please feel free to email me at guncollector@msn.com . I will be happy to share with you what I have learned about these fascinating guns in my 45 years of collecting and shooting them. The Winchesters in general are an Art Form unto themselves and truly exhibit the meaning of "Design/Form follows Funtion". The designers who crafted these early guns were great artists as well as great engineers. Don Schimpff Redding, CA
