Theater is a military term for an area. Example: WWII had two main theaters; the European Theater and the Pacific Theater. One lesser known WWII theater was the CBI Theater (China/Burma/India), e.g. films: "Ojective Burma", starring Errol Flynn; and "Merrill's Marauders", starring Jeff Chandler.
For the Vietnam War, it could have two meanings; a casualty in Southeast Asia which would mean the surrounding waters & Laos, Cambodia, North, South Vietnam. Or just in North/South Vietnam and it's surrounding waters. US Airmen/US Sailors fought over & and along the coastline of North Vietnam...everyone else fought in South Vietnam. Many US Airmen perished over Thailand, Laos, or Cambodia after being battle damaged over North Vietnam...their aircraft afire, and then attempting to eject or make it to friendly airfields in Thailand; or at least the neutral countries of Laos or Cambodia. No US Airman wanted to eject from his aircraft over North Vietnam, he would most often rather risk death by flying his damaged aircraft anywhere, than risk being captured in North Vietnam.
