The red wolf is found today in the Alligator River Refuge here in North Carolina, where I had the privilege of working with the Red Wolf Recovery Project for a time. The last red wolves were captured in the 1970's, and a breeding program established. They were released into the refuge in the late 80's, and now number over 100 animals. They are strictly protected by Federal and State agencies. People around the refuge continue to be educated about them, and measures are underway to eliminate hybridization with coyotes, which sometimes frequent the refuge. Under normal conditions red wolves will drive off or kill coyotes, but will breed with them if a red wolf mate cannot be found.
