You haven't specified which version of Microsoft Word. If like me, you're using Microsoft Word for Vista then you go to the Review tab at the top and click on Spelling & Grammar (the 1st button from the left). A small box will open where you will be able to make certain modifications and keep grammar check on or off. To comprehensively modify everything you have to click on the 'Options...' button which gives you complete control over what exactly you want word to check or not check.
In Microsoft WORD it will activate the SPELL CHECK, try it.
