Best Answer

1. They are not the same.

2. A modem is a device used to send information to and receive from another computer or network. Modem stands for MOdulator/DEModulator and is normally used to send over phone lines. There are other applications (like satellite links, etc).

3. A router does just what it says. It routes signals on a network. One in a home application is normally used to share one access point to the internet between multiple computers.

This is a bit of a simple answer but hopefully you get the idea!

Short Answer

No. They are two completely different pieces of hardware.

Long Answer

A cable modem (MOdulator/DEModulator) modulates analog carrier signals from your internet service provider to digital information and visa versa. The modem provides you with the internet connection.

A router (wireless or not) preforms the task of packet routing; determining which computer on a network is to receive which traffic.

You can connect to the internet without a router, you cannot connect to the internet without some form of modem. However, some internet service providers are now combining modems and wireless routers into a single device. These devices if opened however are still one part modem one part router.

They are of different functions originally:

Modem is for transferring data on the Internet, changing analog data to digital data (so that the computer can understand the code) or vise versa. It can be wired or wireless.

Router is for transferring data between two or more sources, for example two computers. If your computer is not connected to a modem, the router is actually useless. I also know that if you only have one computer, you probably do not need a router..

To conclude, modem gets information from the Internet to your connected network (e.g. when you receive an email, the modem will help changing the analog data to digital data which is processed by the computer) but a router will help allocate the correct information to the correct computer.

However, as they are always used together, there are modem and router combo available now (combining traditional modem and router)

Please help editing my answers if you notice anything wrong, I am not very good at computer technologies.

When you connect to the net through wireless modem pictures doesn't look good?

I would reboot the modem and the router. If that did not work, I would reinstall the router and then look for updates. Then I would reset the modem.

Can I replace my adsl modem with a modem router?

Yes you can because the modem router has a modem built in. There are different types of modem routers that suit different needs. If you are only going to be surfing the web you will need a "N" modem router, if you are going to be sharing files then you will need a "N+" modem router and if you are going to be gaming e.g. connecting to a Xbox 360 or PlayStaion 3 you will need a "N+N" modem router, I would personally recommend Belkin modem routers. Hope you find this useful!

Is a wireless gateway a modem and a router?

there has been a misunderstanding between modem and router. some people use only a modem to connect wirelessly and some use a modem and a router. The fact is there are two types. first type is a modem with built in router, second is router itself. this will clear your mind. you don't have to buy a router to go online, just a get modem with router built in

Where is the router on a PS3?

The PS3 does not have a router. It can go online with an ethernet cable connected to a router or modem or with WiFi from a wireless router or modem

How to connect ps3 to A COMPUTER Using ethernet cable?

If you have a router the ethernet cable connects to it. If you have another item like a PC connected to a modem you could disconnect the ethernet cable from it and plug in the PS3 until you purchase a router.
