This is an executable which is part of "Pivot Pro" software for portrait-enabled monitors which can swivel.

It's part of the driver install, and it's made by a company called "Portrait Displays Inc."

It's not a virus as reported in some places on the internet - I was alarmed myself when I discovered the process running and didn't know what it was.

whether a virus or not always depends on from where the exe is running, not just what the name is

floater.exe is safe if running from the winportrait directory

it starts up each time the computer starts, yet it does not appear in the registry under the 'run' entries

the file which starts win portrait and runs at startup is wpctrl.exe

wpctrl.exe adds the pivot options to the right click on the desktop

floater.exe adds the option of having a floating bar with these pivot options always visible on the desktop

floater.exe is utterly irrelevant to the actual pivot operations. the only way to stop it starting up [in my experience] is to delete or rename the floater.exe file

It can easily be removed from the list of running programs:

bringing up Display properties>Advanced shows you a tab called Pivot software.

Click on it to get to the options. Unselect everything that is enabled, confirm and the software should even be removed from the running task list.

Should you decide that you like it back alive, just go back and select all.
