Packet in Computer Networkingis a slice of DATA that needs to be sent through physical medium of communication to other device on the network. Packet has a well defined strucuture based on Protocol used for identifying source and destination devices. Physical medium can be wired or wireless, depends on the type of Network Interface Card been used. Packets are transmitted over physical medium.

During the transmission of Packets from Network Interface Card when two cards in a starts sending signals over the physical mediumat the same time, transmitted signals collide with each other, this is called PACKET COLLISION.

This channel of physical medium where packets can collide is called Collision domain. Collision domains are generally created in Networks using HUB devices in their Network Topology. Switch devices in Network confine Collision domain to a single port and enable high speed & collision free communication in a Network.

Does Packet Collisions occur in Token Ring Networks?

No, unless the ring is broken then collision can occur

Briefly describe about broadcast and collision domain.?

A collision domain consists of all the clients that could possibly cause a collision amongst themselves by sending a packet at the same time. Devices such as hubs create a single collision domain which means that everyone connected to the hub has the capability of causing a collision (which is a problem).A broadcast domain consists of all the clients that can receive the same broadcast packet. Unlike a collision domain this is not a problem. Think of it as those systems that are capable of receiving the broadcast message.

Basic operation of collision detection in Ethernet?

The basic operation of collision detection in Ethernet is to allow any station to send a packet whenever it is ready. This transmission is known as unslotted ALOHA.

What are a runt a Giant and a collision?

All three are the error which occurs during the transmission. when a packet is less than 64 byte its is called runt normally occurs due to collision. Collision occurs when both interface try to transmit data. When the packet size is more than 6000 byte it is called giant it occurs due to fault in hardware or software of the sending device.

How many packets send in network at a time?

Only 1 packet at a time can use the network resources at a time; the other packets will cause a collision in an Ethernet network. For Token Ring, only 1 packet at a time is on the network (via the token).
