Rust contains iron, but not only iron. It also contains oxygen and water (which in turn consists of oxygen and hydrogen). Technically it is hydrated iron(III) oxide (once known as ferric oxide). The "hydrated" part means that water molecules are loosely bound to an array (lattice) of iron(III) ions and oxide ions.

Iron and oxygen have different properties than iron oxide. Oxygen speeds burning and iron oxide doesn't. Iron combines with oxygen and iron oxide is already stable so it doesn't combine with anything. It has a different melting point, etc.

Iron (symbol Fe and atomic number 26) and Oxygen (atomic number 8 and symbol O). That is why rust is some times referred to as oxidation.
