Sand is rock material that has been eroded into tiny grains. Theoretically, sand could be composed of any eroded rock (for instance, the White Sands in New Mexico are gypsum), but it is largely made up of quartz because quartz is a very hard substance and so does not erode particularly easily. So when softer rock material has all been eroded away, quartz still exists in large quantities.

In geology and civil engineering, sand can also be defined based around the size of the grains. Sand grains fit in the range 0.06 - 2 mm

  • Coarse silt = 0.02 - 0.06 mm
  • Fine sand = 0.06 - 0.2 mm
  • Medium sand = 0.2 - 0.6 mm
  • Coarse sand = 0.6 - 2 mm
  • Fine gravel = 2 - 6 mm

Source of data:
British Standards Institution (1999) BS 5930:1999 Code of practice for site investigations. Milton Keynes, BSI. Sand is a loose granular material that forms from the breaking down of rocks. It consists of particles that are smaller than gravel but coarser than silt. You find sand on beaches and deserts.
