The street plan of Philadelphia is special because of how it was laid out. The streets were planned by William Penn who wanted each house to have enough room for a garden. Each lot is either a half acre or an acre and the streets are very broad.

William Penn's city plan was radical for its time, but is common design today in all cities. His plan for a green area that would surround the city, became the outline of the modern suburb. He accurately predicted the city would need to have a semi-urban area for the middle class, and that the city, once established, would grow rapidly.
