There are three branches of the American government. The legislative, executive, and judicial branches. The legislative branch holds the senate and the house of Representatives. The executive branch holds the chief executive, the chief diplomat, the chief legislator, the commander-in-chief of armed forces, and the chief of state. The judicial branch holds the court.
The principles of the American system of government are republicanism, popular sovereignty, federalism, limited government, separation of powers, checks and balances, unalienable rights, and the concept of democracy. All of these ensure that the power of the government comes from the people.
It's a federalist system (the constituent parts--the states--have exclusive legislative jurisdiction). It's an elective monarchy (the president is a monarch) in which the monarch has more power than in most monarchies except those based on the American system. This is because the constitution was based on 18th century monarchies and has never been updated.
