The domain name of a Website is what you use to type in the adress bar.

Say , every time you go to wiki.answers.com or to Google.com , you are typing in a domain name!

The internet is made up of many computers that are identified by their IP address , but IP addresses are hard to remember, so domain names just transform those ugly IP addresses into nice easy to remember names :)

A registered domain name is how a web site owner gets a domain name server address using a ICCANN domain registrar. Such as: authorswebhosting.com

Then the owner updates the DNS to point to the server where the web site is hosted

A URL is different from a domain name, but it does include the domain name because it adds the entire Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, (http://), to the domain name. such as the following: http://www.authorswebhosting.com

A domain is a basic part of a URL (web address). In the URL "wiki.answers.com", "com" is the top-level domain (TLD), which is maintained by IANA. "answers" is the second-level domain (almost always shortened to "domain") probably owned by Bob Rosenschein, the creator of answers.com. Since he (probably) owns that domain, he can then create any subdomains he wants, such as "wiki". This applies anywhere, including "m.facebook.com", "what-if.xkcd.com", etc. At least two levels of domains (facebook.com, with "facebook" and "com") are required. "www" is a subdomain, however, that usually just does what it would without the "www" ("www.facebook.com" links to "facebook.com"). You can also have sub-subdomains, such as "www.del.icio.us". Subdomains often redirect to their parents. For example "www.del.icio.us", "del.icio.us", and "icio.us" all go to the same place.
