The Channel Tunnel is a rail tunnel which connects England and France, running underneath the English Channel.

The Channel Tunnel is a 50.5 Km from end to end, of which 37.9 Km is underwater.

The Channel Tunnel runs between Folkestone in Kent and Sangatte near Calais in Pas-de-Calais.

At its lowest point, the Channel Tunnel is 75 metres (250 ft) below sea level.

A train takes approximately 25 minutes to go through the Channel Tunnel.

The Channel Tunnel opened in 1994.

You have two options for travelling through the Channel Tunnel. You can take a high speed passenger train, or you can put your car one of the drive-on, drive-off vehicle transporting trains.

The Eurotunnel Shuttle is the brand name for the car carrying trains which run through the Channel Tunnel between Folkestone and Calais.

Eurostar is the brand name of the company running high speed trains London-Paris and London-Lille-Brussels through the Channel Tunnel.

Eurostar trains run at up to 300 Km/Hr on the High Speed Lines on either side of the Channel Tunnel.

Eurostar uses the stations: St. Pancras (London), Gare du Nord (Paris), Bruxelles Midi (Brussels) and Lille Europe. Some trains stop additionally at other intermediate stations.

Currently these are the only passenger trains operating through the tunnel.

The Eurostar takes 2 hours 15 minutes between London and Paris. There is approximately one train per hour in each direction.

The Channel Tunnel permits trains to move between England and France. Both cargo (trucks on rail cars) and passengers are carried through the tunnel.

Answer 2There are 4 types of train currently using the Channel Tunnel.

1) Passenger trains. The only ones currently operating are the "Eurostar" high speed trains running London-Paris and London-Lille-Brussels.

2) Freight trains. These are run by a number of different train companies.

3) "Eurotunnel Shuttle" lorry carrying trains. These are drive-on drive-off trains, but the drivers travel in a separate coach at one end of the train.

4) "Eurotunnel Shuttle" car carrying trains. These are drive-on drive-off trains. Part of the train is double-deck, and is used of cars. Part is single deck and this is used for coaches and other higher vehicles. On these trains passengers stay with their vehicles, but they can get out if they wish.

The "Eurotunnel Shuttle" trains are run by "Eurotunnel", which is the company which owns the tunnel. They run between terminals at the two ends of the tunnel, Folkestone in Kent, and near Calais in Pas-de-Calais.

The Channel Tunnel (French: Le tunnel sous la Manche), is a 50.5-kilometre (31.4 mi) undersea rail tunnel linking Folkestone, Kent in the United Kingdom with Coquelles, Pas-de-Calais in northern France. At its lowest point it is 75 metres (246 ft) deep. At 37.9 km (23.5 miles), the Channel Tunnel has the longest undersea portion of any tunnel in the world although the Seikan Tunnel in Japan is both longer overall, at 53.85 km (33.46 miles) and deeper, at 240 metres (790 ft) below sea level.

The tunnel carries high-speed Eurostar passenger trains, Eurotunnel Shuttle roll-on/roll-off vehicle transport and freight trains. The tunnel connects end-to-end with the LGV Nord and High Speed 1 high-speed railway lines.

Ideas for a cross-Channel fixed link appeared as early as 1802, but British political and press pressure over compromised national security stalled attempts to construct a tunnel. Construction began in 1988 and the tunnel opened in 1994. The project came in 80% over its predicted budget.
