A Torah scroll is about the size and weight of a baby, and takes close to a year's labor by a highly trained scribe to create. If you had something that big and that expensive, I suspect you'd put it in a nice box to protect it. That's what the ark is. It's called a holy merely because it's used to hold a sacred text (or texts, since most synagogues want to have at least two Torah scrolls -- some services go more smoothly with multiple scrolls).

Why is the ark the most important part of the synogogue?

The ark in a synagogue is cabinet (usually quite an ornate one) at the front of the sanctuary (prayer hall) where the synagogue's torah scrolls are stored when not in use. It is the focal point of the sanctuary because the Torah is the defining sacred text of Judaism. The Torah scrolls themselves each hold the entire text of the Torah, from Genesis to Deuteronomy. Each scroll is handwritten by a skilled scribe on animal-hide parchment.
