1. The Casino It costs 10 Euro to get in but is magnificent inside. And if you're lucky like me you can win back the entry fee on the roulette table ;) 2. The Prince's Palace, the Oceanographic Museum and the Old Town Walk up the ramp to the top of "the Rock". Watch the changing of the guard for… free, and walk in the beautiful gardens there which overlook the new reclaimed land of Fontvielle. In the tourist season, take the "mini-train" (a car which looks like a train) from outside the Oceanographic Museum for a tour of Monaco. Wander the narrow streets of old Monaco here. 3. The Marina Here you can walk along and see Yachts costing tens of millions of Euro! They are truly staggering and you may even spot a celebrity. Stop for a fairly reasonable coffee here on the waterfront, and buy souvenirs by the subway entrance. 4. The Bus Ride To Nice Or from Nice to Monaco , if you're clever and staying in Nice on the cheap! The bus costs 1 euro to go anywhere, and the journey between Nice and Monaco is amazing. Make sure you get the one that stops, not the express. It's the number 100 ("cent" in French, pronounced "numero song") 5. The skating rink or swimming pool. An open-air pool or rink, depending on the season, right on the marina. 6. The Museum of Cars. This is the Prince's own personal collection and there is every car enthusiast's dream car here! From the entire twentieth century, the collection includes many Ferrari's, Packards, Rollers, very unusual French and Italian cars and one car that is the only one in the world! There are also F1 cars and rally cars here. The car museum shop is also one of the best places for souvenirs. 7. The Sculpture Trail The Principality is full of immaculate parks and these in turn are full of exciting sculpture. In one of the parks is a huge underground cave which is reputed to be a very early settlement fopr mankind. 8. The Museum of Automatons Life-size puppets which move. I have not seen this, but it is beyond the casino, on the way to the official beach. 9. The Carrefour - Yes! the supermarket hidden inside the Rock is a great place to get cheap lunch which you can eat outside the car museum for free with a great view of the harbour! 10. The Streets In addition to the occasional bit of rumble strip, there are amazing houses to discover and weird escalators and lifts at every turn to ease your wanderings. Even the railway station is worth a peek as it's entirely underground. Just be sure not to jaywalk, you must cross at a zebra crossing in Monaco! 11. Le Condamine This area, just back from the central section of the marina (where the pool / rink is), is full of amazing shops. (MORE)

History records the first "founding" of Monaco in 1245. There are conflicting later in time dates for the answer to this question. Many people claim a date closer to 1419. As this tiny country has been ruled by the current "royal family" as a Constitutional Monarchy, founding dates are not reliable… or firm. Apparently, although this area has been inhabited for hundreds of years, it was once part of France. In 1419, France gave Monaco its independence. (MORE)

Other well known districts of Monaco are Monte Carlo, famous for its casino and luxury hotels, La Condamin…e (the port area), Fontvieille (the industrial district reclaimed from the sea). The capital of Monaco is also called Monaco. It's really to do with the (tiny) size of the place. To avoid confusion the capital is sometimes now referred to as Monaco-Ville, and consists of the "Old Town" that sits upon "The Rock". It is the original "Monaco", and home to the Prince's Palace, Oceanographic Museum and many original Monagesque families also live here on the seaward end. So Monaco is the original town, but through history the borders have eventually become fixed and now incorporate the three other areas of Monte Carlo, Fontvielle and La Condamine. Since the whole lot is governed by Monaco, it is all Monaco now, and you will hear Monaco-Ville being said to refer to "The Rock". It all comes down to expansion and the way the town / principality has grown. If you go there, you would swear it is no more than a mere town in France with its own police and laws, whereas politically it is a country. (MORE)
