Both type 1 (insulin-dependent/"juvenile*") and type 2 (non-insulin dependent/"adult onset*") Diabetes mellitus, if uncontrolled, can present initially with an abnormal increase in thirst, hunger, and urination. If left unchecked for too long, both can lead to several harmful and life-threatening effects, including:

1. cerebral infarcts & hemorrhages (areas of brain tissue death due to lack of oxygen or bleeding within the brain, respectfully, both of which can be fatal),

2. myocardial infarcts (areas of heart muscle death due to lack of oxygen; also know as a "heart attack"),

3. blindness(due to retinopathy, glaucoma, & cataracts),

4. loss of pancreatic beta cells (which produce the insulin that manages blood sugar levels),

5.glomerulosclerosis (hardening of the part of the kidney responsible for the production of urine, resulting in excessive loss of protein),

6.pyelonephritis (severe urinary tract infection reaching all the way from the urethra where urine leaves the body up through the bladder, ureter, and finally into the kidney),

7. various neuropathies of muscles and organs (nerve damage resulting in abnormal or loss of function; eg. peripheral neuropathy which causes pain and/or numbness in the hands and feet), and

8. gangrene(tissue death due to infection, usually associated with a loss of sensation in the feet, that will progressively spread if the infected area is not amputated and eventually lead to the infection spreading into the blood [sepsis], which is fatal)

9. amputation of limbs (see 7 & 8)

just to name a few.

None of these secondary conditions resulting from uncontrolled diabetes are pleasant and many are down-right fatal. If any of the following apply to you, please get a simple blood test and talk to your doctor about diabetes: if someone in your family has diabetes, you are overweight, have high blood pressure, are a smoker, have/had a disease or infection of the pancreas, lack exercise, or have polycystic ovary syndrome. Hispanic/Latino Americans, African-Americans, Native Americans, Asian-Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Alaska natives are also at an increased risk of diabetes.

*juvenile and adult-onset diabetes are now becoming a misnomer in that both can occur at any stage of life

Can you donate blood with uncontrolled diabetes type 2?

If you take insulin, you are not eligible to donate. The rationale is that donating blood could interrupt your blood glucose control, and potentially lead to a hypoglycemic reaction in the clinic or on the way home. If you manage your diabetes with lifestyle or diabetes pills, you may be eligible, depending on your overall health. Many people who have type 2 diabetes have blood pressure and heart problems, which would prevent them from donating.

What is controlled diabetes and uncontrolled diabetes?

I have diabetes trust me I know. Diabetes that is controlled means that you consistently have a correct number of sugar in your blood, uncontrolled means that you do not. Diabetes is caused when an organ called a pancreas breaks down, the pancreas controls how much sugar glucose is in your blood, when it breaks down you have to do it manually. I think controlled diabetes is when blood sugar level is safe.Safe Blood Sugar level is the optimum range that safely provided the body with the adequate amount of energy. For the average person it is 70 to 105mg/dl in the fasting state. Uncontrolled diabetes is when the level of diabetes is at or above 126mg/dl in the fasting state.
