What is the difference between epileptic fits and convulsions?

They are different names for what is basically the same thing. The word seizure is also used.
It is possible for convulsions or seizures to be caused by other medical conditions.
Once the medical problem is corrected, the seizures stop. Your doctor will rule out other causes out before diagnosing epilepsy. Some of these problems are very serious. You should go to the ER if you have a seizure and have 1) high fever (esp. for children), 2)head injury, 3)Heart disease, 4) toxemia in pregnancy 5)chance you have meningitis 6) severe heat stroke 7) drug overdose.
