Linux is free and is only charged a minimal if you desire support. For more information go to wikipedia.org and search for GPL which tells you more about Linux.

Windows is a patented operating system which has to be bought although pirated versions are free you are liable to legal prosecution if you use piracy.

What is the difference between Windows web hosting and Linux web hosting?

The difference is simply what operating system the web host's servers are running. Linux web hosts typically support PHP, MySQL, and related software. Windows hosts typically support ASP and related software (along with some form of an SQL server, but that varies by host). It does not matter whether you run Windows or Linux (or another operating system) on your machine.

What is the relationship between Microsoft and Linux?

Microsoft and Linux have no direct relationship. Microsoft has frequently attacked the reliability and cost effectiveness of Linux in order to promote their own Windows Server products. They do not release any software for Linux directly, but have made several "deals" with various commercial Linux vendors, such as Novell, Xandros, and Linspire, to license Windows media codecs.

The cost depends on who you go with. Unlike Windows, there is no one entity that oversees the development of Linux. The closest is the RedHat Certified Engineer certificate, and the exam costs $400USD. There are other programs from companies like Novell and Oracle that train you in various Linux distributions.

What is cheaper windows operating system or Linux?

This is often highly debated by IT experts. In terms of licensing only, Linux is much less expensive than Windows: Linux is free of cost as the GPL is a license applied to distribution only. Where it gets fuzzy is in Total Cost of Ownership (TCO), some argue Linux is more "expensive" because of training and hardware support, though others argue that for normal users who need to use a few applications those TCO factors are not relevant. In my opinion Windows is much more expensive.

Why does Google use Linux instead of Windows?

There are several reasons why Google uses Linux for many of its needs instead of Windows: 1. Linux is cheaper (even available for free). Server versions of Windows can cost, depending on the specific edition, several thousand dollars per copy. With hundreds of servers, this is not a small investment. 2. Windows does not support the multitude of architectures that Linux does. Using Linux, Google can easily migrate to or utilize ultra-powerful systems from IBM or Sun. 3. Linux can be easily implemented in non-traditional systems, such as those with thousands of processors or with several terabytes of RAM. Windows HPC 2008 is very expensive to license for such an application and has not been as well tested in this area.
