A distributor can be put in several different spots as far as which point on the distributor is number 1. If you have not had the distributor out of the engine, take number one plug out and hold your finger over the hole and crank the engine by hand until you feel the compression building. Watch the crank shaft pulley for the timing mark and when it gets to the pointer, that is number 1. Look under the distributor cap to see which one the rotor is pointing at.
